Empowerment is a core component of health and wellness. Keeping one’s metaphorical cup full and remaining resilient through life’s many ups and downs is essential. When women feel empowered to speak up — whether about their passions, dreams, hopes, needs, goals, or struggles — they are more likely to make choices that improve their overall well-being and inspire those around them.

For generations, many women have balanced careers, caregiving, and personal responsibilities while often putting themselves last. Empowerment means encouraging women to prioritize their own health without guilt. Small actions, such as scheduling regular checkups, getting enough rest, setting boundaries, and practicing self-care, can have a lasting impact on both physical and emotional health.

Strong support systems also play a major role in women’s wellness. Conversations among mothers, daughters, grandmothers, mentors, neighbors, and friends can create safe spaces for sharing experiences and advice. Seeking out these types of communities, whether among girlfriends, family members, or new friends, can expose women to resources or support they may not have realized they needed, while also providing a sense of belonging. Socializing and sharing with one another helps women feel heard, valued, and empowered to succeed. These honest discussions also help younger generations learn about resilience, confidence, and the importance of advocating for themselves in school, work, relationships, and healthcare settings.

In our turbulent world, women’s voices remain essential in shaping healthier communities, and so does their resilience. Empowered women who can cope with change and conflict encourage one another to pursue goals in education, leadership, and beyond while breaking down outdated stereotypes. By supporting women’s wellbeing and uplifting one another, we create a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

When was the last time you were curious about the woman or women you love in your life? Lift them up and learn by asking some of the questions below. Who knows what you might discover?

What life experience taught you the most about your strength or resilience?

How do you take care of your mental and emotional health during difficult times?

What advice would you give younger women about confidence and self-worth?

Who or what inspired you most growing up, and why?

What is one lesson about health or self-care you wish more people understood?

Are you nourished? What does that even mean? I'll suggest we all want to flourish. Heck, we deserve that and when we are our best so is everyone in our world.

The post Nourishment first appeared on Simplafyi.

When you hear the word Nourishment what comes to mind?

According to Dictionary.com, Nourishment is something that does or provides what’s needed for someone or something to be healthy and to grow and develop.

Nourishment goes beyond physical, tangible sustenance. When most of us hear the word, we focus on food and nutrition. However, I want to draw your attention to the other more overlooked facets of nourishment. I am talking about deep nourishment of the mind, body and spirit and how it feeds us and brings us to a new level of wellbeing or holistic nourishment.

I would like to challenge you to choose a practice of nourishment for your mind, body and spirit. This practice is just that – a practice – and weaving a nourishing act into your daily routine will positively affect your overall health and wellbeing.

You may have already identified practices that comfort and fuel you; maybe you practice yoga, light a candle, journal, or meditate. Below are some practices that support your mind, body and spirit contributing to holistic nourishment. I encourage you to challenge yourself by trying a new practice this month and see how you feel.

Take a moment to ponder what you are doing to nourish your mind, body, and spirit. Notice how you feel in response. If you regularly practice self-care, how do you feel the rest of the day? What do you notice about your mood, or the way you react to life?

If this is new for you, experiment with yourself; see what works and what doesn’t, how do you feel in your body after trying something new? Maybe just that is enough to contribute to your holistic nourishment – trying something new! If a daily commitment feels too overwhelming, begin with a weekly or monthly one. Remember, the best gift you can give is the gift of wellbeing to yourself.

Discover your blend:

Mind:

Journal

Meditate

Sound bath

Therapy

Body:

Outdoor walks in your favorite place

Try a new type of workout class

Set a goal to work towards, like:

Sign up for a race

Commit to 15 minutes of yoga daily

Eat all colors of the rainbow

Take a cold shower

Spirit:

Listen to a podcast

Cook a yummy healthy meal for loved ones

Call a friend

Enroll in a new course and learn something new

Volunteer

Read a book

Diffuse your favorite essential oil

As you expand your nourishment, check in with your body, mind and spirit. See what comes up for you. Not everything will resonate and that is okay. This is an ongoing practice to discover and improve your overall health and wellbeing. If it does not feel nourishing for you then move on until something does.

This is our challenge to you! But a welcome one if you are committed to feeling your best in mind, body and spirit.

Have you ever wondered how acupuncture specifically targets inflammation, and the pain that is commonly associated with it?

Acupuncture is widely used to treat pain and chronic pain. Since pain is usually associated with inflammation, it’s not much of a leap to investigate whether acupuncture can treat inflammation itself. Inflammation is the manifestation of your body’s immune defenses against invaders. Immune cells release chemicals called cytokines into the blood to protect your body from infection. Cytokines can cause inflammation and swelling in the body, which may stimulate your nerves, causing you to feel pain. As inflammation goes unresolved, pain can continue and become chronic.

Acupuncture for Acute Inflammation

Appendicitis is a painful, inflammatory condition. If that nondescript organ in your abdomen becomes infected or ruptures, intense acute pain is common. A small study of pediatric appendicitis patients evaluated pain before and after an acupuncture intervention. The researchers also measured the patients’ levels of inflammatory markers in the blood, including white blood cell count and C-reactive protein before, during, and after acupuncture. After the intervention, patients reported lower levels of pain. Their white blood cell counts also decreased, indicating reduced inflammation.

Acupuncture for Chronic Inflammation

Acupuncture appears to play an important role in diseases with chronic inflammation, like type 2 diabetes. Among patients with diabetes, biomarkers of inflammation may be elevated. Those biomarkers can include the cytokines interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), among others. Lifestyle therapies for diabetes like maintaining a healthy weight and eating an anti-inflammatory diet are very effective, but many people who are diagnosed with diabetes receive a prescription for Metformin. The drug Metformin typically results in an average of about 5% weight loss, but it can’t control weight, inflammation, or diabetes on its own. Taking an integrative approach to managing chronic inflammation present in diabetes, like adding acupuncture, may be successful.

A randomized controlled trial compared the effects of Metformin alone and Metformin in combination with acupuncture on weight loss and insulin sensitivity among overweight and obese patients with diabetes. The study found that the integrative combination therapy improved a variety of biomarkers related to diabetes and inflammation. Patients who underwent the co-therapy approach lost more weight, had better fasting blood sugar, insulin, the inflammatory markers IL-6 and TNF-α, and more. This study showed that acupuncture is an insulin sensitizer, a crucial component of diabetes management. Furthermore, acupuncture “is able to improve insulin sensitivity possibly by reducing body weight and inflammation.” Very exciting findings in integrative medicine!

Final Thoughts on Integrative Inflammation Management

In both of the above-reviewed studies, acupuncture was used in a conventional healthcare setting to manage chronic and acute pain and inflammation. Of course, the challenge is to integrate acupuncture into these therapies more widely. As evidence for the power of complementary therapies mounts, we are hopeful that patients will be likelier to turn to acupuncture alongside conventional medical interventions. SimplaFYI has vetted integrative care practitioners offering preferred pricing to SimplaFYI Members. Learn more here.

May is a magical month! When the temperature finally tops 60, 70, even 80 degrees, Mother Nature bursts onto the scene in a vivid array of colors, textures, aromas, and sounds. Perhaps that’s one reason why the nonprofit organization Mental Health America picked May as Mental Health Month − because bearing witness to springtime’s rebirth is uplifting and, on some level, even spiritually healing. Add longer days of light and we have the ingredients for clarity.

What better way to attend to your own mental health this month than by taking some time to experience Mother Nature? A recent study by the University of British Columbia found that taking time, even a brief few minutes, to notice and appreciate nature in all its forms – from the most majestic mountain range to a small, bright yellow dandelion growing in a sidewalk crack − can lead to deeper feelings of happiness and wellbeing. And in Japan, the practice of shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing,” which advocates simply being among the trees, has been studied and recommended since the 1980s. Research there and in the U.S. has found that spending time in the woods can help reduce stress, improve mood, and even strengthen immunity. All this with no side effects!

Why not take a walk, hike, or bike ride through tree-lined paths or along rivers and streams? Or choose a peaceful, natural location such as the beach or a park for your daily meditation, a picnic with family or friends, or an informal moment of reflection. Use your smartphone to photograph what you notice, so you can call up the image whenever you need a quick mental boost. Finally, consider how each of us is just one tiny part of this miraculous planet that somehow manages to sustain us all. Isn’t Mother Nature magical?

Does your outdoor time in the Spring cause allergies to flare? If so, studies show that acupuncture can help!

As someone who participates in acupuncture to manage ulcerative colitis, I welcome the knowledge of additional conditions acupuncture supports. In this particular study, researchers randomly selected 300 emergency departments and split them into two even groups. The first group was subjected to acupuncture in order to treat their acute pain, while the second group was given morphine.

The results were even better than researchers imagined. Patients who were treated with acupuncture experienced a whopping 92 percent reduction in their pain, while the morphine group experienced a 78 percent reduction. Not only that, the acupuncture group had a much faster pain recovery time. While the morphine group took an average of 28 minutes to recover from their pain, the acupuncture group recovered from their pain in an average of 16 minutes.

So, the alternative treatment was both more effective in reducing pain and faster. So what’s the catch? There doesn’t appear to be one! Not only did acupuncture blow the conventional medical treatment out of the water on those fronts, it also had fewer drawbacks. Of the one in three patients who experienced adverse side effects from the treatment, 57 percent of these were in the morphine group and just 2.6 percent were in the acupuncture group. Read more here.

The post Acupuncture or Morphine?

So far so good, I have not come down with the flu so far this “season”. Each year many of us contemplate whether to get the flu shot or not. My defense, has been to stay clear of touching public doorknobs (use your coat, sleeve, paper towel, glove, sneak through when someone else opens the door, etc.), drink plenty of water, eat healthy and nourishing foods, exercise and drink delicious teas infused with immune boosting herbs. Sounds a lot like my usual recipe for wellbeing. Perhaps maybe a few more cups of tea during flu “season”!
