										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">When you hear the word Nourishment what comes to mind?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">According to <a href="https://www.dictionary.com/browse/nourishment">Dictionary.com</a>, <em>Nourishment</em> is something that does or provides what’s needed for someone or something to be healthy and to grow and develop.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">Nourishment goes beyond physical, tangible sustenance. When most of us hear the word, we focus on food and nutrition. However, I want to draw your attention to the other more overlooked facets of nourishment. I am talking about deep nourishment of the mind, body and spirit and how it feeds us and brings us to a new level of wellbeing or holistic nourishment.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">I would like to challenge you to choose a practice of nourishment for your mind, body and spirit. This practice is just that – a practice – and weaving a nourishing act into your daily routine will positively affect your overall health and wellbeing.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">You may have already identified practices that comfort and fuel you; maybe you practice yoga, light a candle, journal, or meditate. Below are some practices that support your mind, body and spirit contributing to holistic nourishment. I encourage you to challenge yourself by trying a new practice this month and see how you feel.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">Take a moment to ponder what you are doing to nourish your mind, body, and spirit. Notice how you feel in response. If you regularly practice self-care, how do you feel the rest of the day? What do you notice about your mood, or the way you react to life?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">If this is new for you, experiment with yourself; see what works and what doesn’t, how do you feel in your body after trying something new? Maybe just that is enough to contribute to your holistic nourishment – trying something new! If a daily commitment feels too overwhelming, begin with a weekly or monthly one. Remember, the best gift you can give is the gift of wellbeing to yourself.</span></p>

Not everything will resonate and that is okay. This is an ongoing practice to discover and improve your overall health and wellbeing. According to the <a href="https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Disorders/Patient-Caregiver-Education/Fact-Sheets/Low-Back-Pain-Fact-Sheet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke</a>, about 80% of adults experience low back pain at some point in their lives. In fact, it’s the most common cause of work-related disabilities. Although both over-the-counter and prescription medications (including opioids) are often used as a first line of defense in treating back pain, times are changing.  <a href="http://annals.org/aim/fullarticle/2603228/noninvasive-treatments-acute-subacute-chronic-low-back-pain-clinical-practice" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The American College of Physicians</a> now recommend spinal manipulation as the first course of treatment for individuals suffering from this and other types of chronic pain.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Chiropractic is a medical specialty that focuses on how the body’s structure, primarily the spine, relates to its overall function. In chiropractic care, hands-on spinal manipulation is used to realign joints and optimize the body’s ability to heal itself. Commonly used to alleviate back pain, chiropractic is also used to treat neck pain, headaches, nerve issues, injuries to the joints of the upper and lower extremities, and fibromyalgia.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">While spinal manipulation is the core component of chiropractic care, other treatments include heat and ice, electrical stimulation, lifestyle, exercise, and nutrition counseling. Chiropractic care is often combined with other therapies, including traditional medicine, massage, and acupuncture, to help patients manage pain and return to normal function.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">A 2017 <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2616395" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that spinal manipulative therapy “was associated with statistically significant benefits in both pain and function,” when used to treat low back pain.</span></p>

Whether you’re drawn to flowers or vegetables, June is an ideal time to get digging in the dirt. And since June is also National Safety Month, here are some gardening safety tips from the Centers for Disease Control:</span></p>
<ol>
<li><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">Before you get dirty, be sure to stretch. It will get your body prepared for the work ahead.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">Make sure your tetanus &amp; diphtheria vaccines are up to date. You never know what you will find in the dirt.</span></li>

<li><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">Operating a power tool? Wear proper clothing &#8212; including gloves, goggles, ear protection, sturdy, closed-toe shoes, and long pants.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">Wear light-colored long sleeves and long pants tucked into socks, and use insect repellant, (those with DEET are very effective and found to be safe if used as directed), to protect yourself from ticks and other insects.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, along with a wide-brimmed hat.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">Drink extra fluids in the heat; water is best. Avoid those with alcohol and excess sugar.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">Eat healthy foods to keep up your energy, like fruits or a protein shake.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">Monitor your heart rate and level of fatigue. Take breaks in the shade if you feel breathless, tired, or sore.</span></li>

<p>Did you know that October is National Chiropractic Month?  It was news to me as well and given that SimplaFYI is in the business of expanding awareness and access to chiropractic care, among other integrative care practices, I am glad we found out!  Our spine health is such an important part of wellbeing.  I don&#8217;t know about you, but I have certainly had my share of back issues and every day am cautious of how I move for fear of re-injuring my &#8220;fragile&#8221; lower back.</p>
<p>According to the American Chiropractic Association, a healthy spine is an often-overlooked and essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, approximately 80% of the population suffers from spinal pain at some point. People who are overweight or obese, who smoke, lift heavy objects, or had a previous episode of back pain, are more likely to experience back pain.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Several years ago I had a luggage carrying incident (prior to my investment in a rolling bag) in the Atlanta airport that had my lower back in excruciating pain.  So much pain I could hardly move.  After taking over the counter anti-inflammatories and creating a &#8220;standing desk&#8221; with boxes (I couldn&#8217;t sit down), I got little relief.  After two weeks, I decided to try chiropractic.  Chiropractic had always been a bit of a mystery to me, particularly because my parents were never fans and in fact used the term &#8220;quacks&#8221; when I was growing up.  I did some research and asked around and through self-study felt comfortable enough to make an appointment.  The office was warm and welcoming, the team kind and efficient.  Through a combination of adjustments, heat and cold applications, my back was better.  It took a series of visits due to the severity of my mis-alignment but well worth the time.  I was impressed with the practice of chiropractic &#8211; I could sit down again and the pain subsided.  In addition to having success, using a natural drug-free solution, appeals to me.  I&#8217;m not sure where the &#8220;quack&#8221; label came from, but it works for me.   How about <strong>YOU</strong>?</p>
