March is National Nutrition Month, and on the heels of International Women’s Day, Simplafyi is considering womens’ unique nutritional needs.

These needs change throughout life, influenced by factors such as hormones, metabolism, and life stages including pregnancy and menopause. Paying attention to these unique needs can help support energy, bone health, cardiovascular health, and long-term disease prevention. A balanced dietary pattern that includes whole foods, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats provides the foundation for meeting needs that arise in a woman’s life while supporting overall wellbeing (World Health Organization).

A key nutrient for many women is iron, which helps carry oxygen throughout the body and supports energy levels. Women who reproduce and are of reproduction age generally require more iron than men due to menstrual blood loss. Iron-rich foods such as spinach, lentils, beans, and fortified cereals can help maintain healthy levels. Pairing plant-based iron sources with vitamin C-rich foods like citrus or bell peppers can also improve absorption of that iron (National Institutes of Health).

Bone health is another important consideration. Women are at greater risk for bone loss and conditions such as osteoporosis, particularly after menopause when estrogen levels decline. Consuming adequate levels of calcium and vitamin D helps maintain strong bones throughout life. Yogurt, kale, and fortified plant milks can contribute calcium, while vitamin D may come from fortified foods, fatty fish, or spending some time outside on a sunny day (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Sleep is an important factor to consider in women’s health, also, as women commonly shoulder a disproportionate share of the household’s mental and emotional labor.

Certain nutrients like folate play a vital role in a woman’s childbearing years. Also known to us as vitamin B9, folate supports cell growth and is especially important before and during early pregnancy. Folate-rich foods include leafy greens, beans, and whole grains. At the same time, healthy fats found in nuts, seeds, and fish provide essential fatty acids that support heart and brain health across a woman’s lifetime.

Ultimately, women’s nutrition is about more than individual nutrients, it’s about creating sustainable habits. Approaching nutrition through a holistic lifestyle lens can help women meet their evolving nutritional needs while building habits that support vitality and wellbeing for years to come!

In an age of distraction, attention is one of the most valuable gifts we have to offer. However, we rarely think of it as a form of nourishment, feeding and fueling others and ourselves. What if we began to consider focused attention the way we consider food: as something vital, shared, and impactful?

Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Han asserted, “The most precious gift we can offer anyone is our attention. When mindfulness embraces those we love.” What if we thought of every glance, pause or listening ear as an act towards feeding someone’s spirit.

Psychology supports this train of thought. Research in attachment theory and child development consistently shows that focused and responsive attention is foundational to healthy emotional development…and it doesn’t stop in childhood! Adults also thrive when they feel seen and heard. Still, many of us move through our days half listening, multitasking our way through moments begging for more presence. And this is not because we don’t care – it is often because we are running on empty ourselves!

So how do we replenish our attention so it becomes nourishing again? Make a concentrated effort to tune back into your day. A few minutes of mindful breathing – or listening – can serve as a grounding break from everyday monotony. We love a quick lunch-break stretch outside…an opportunity to swing our arms and sway, feeling October’s cool breeze and listening to the rustling of the crisping leaves on the ground and in the trees.

Re-engage. When with those you love, turn off your phone, make eye contact, and listen without interrupting or wait to speak. Focused attention begins with undivided presence. If you’re drifting, call it out! Apologize and suggest a meaningful activity together, recommitment can start small. Try something simple like a walk or meal without screens.

Just as our bodies need fuel, our relationships thrive on presence, curiosity, and care. In a world full of noise, choosing to truly see and hear those close to you is one of the best things you can do to nourish yourself and others!

We all carry a story, one shaped by our experiences, challenges, and dreams. But the real question is: how are you telling it, and what impact does that have on your wellbeing?

Research shows that the way we frame our personal narratives matters. People who view their struggles as turning points for growth often report greater resilience and lower levels of depression (Psychological Science, 2013). Even children who know and share family stories develop higher self-esteem and stronger coping skills, simply by reflecting on and retelling those stories (Emory University, 2010). Stories, it seems, don’t just explain our past, but rather, they shape our health in the present.

When the story we tell ourselves is one of failure or limitation, we reinforce feelings of stress. Nearly three in four adults report experiencing overwhelming stress at least once in the past month (American Psychological Association, 2023). But reframing those same experiences as lessons rather than endings has been linked to reduced cortisol levels and improved immune function (Frontiers in Psychology, 2016).

The benefits extend into every area of life. Journaling about personal experiences has been shown to improve mood, sleep, and confidence (Advances in Psychiatric Treatment, 2005). In the workplace, confidence in one’s abilities correlates strongly with success: employees who believe in themselves set more ambitious goals, persist longer, and perform better overall (Journal of Applied Psychology, 2002). In other words, every time you reflect, write, or reframe your experiences, you’re not only telling your story – you’re shaping your health, wellbeing, and future.

The beauty of it all is that your story isn’t fixed. You get to revise it and every moment of gratitude, acceptance, or understanding can become part of that unfolding narrative. So ask yourself: what story am I telling, and is it one that supports the life and health I want to create?

A few ways to start rewriting your story:

Reframe setbacks as lessons rather than failures

Journal to process and reflect on your experiences

Share your story with others to strengthen connection

Recognize small healthy habits as part of your larger narrative

Could your team use help reframing their story? SimplaFYI can help. Check out our programs and services to discover how.

The post What’s Your Story and How Are You Telling it? first appeared on Simplafyi.

Roaming, wandering without a strict plan, is more than just a pleasant pastime. It’s a mindfulness practice and gentle form of exercise – a way to give your brain and body the reset they crave.

When you roam:

Whether it’s the rush of a nearby stream, the buzz of bees, the smell of honeysuckle flowers, or the whizzing of bike tires these are the small and grounding moments that roaming brings into focus.

Unstructured outdoor and adventure time can:

Sometimes the most refreshing journeys are the ones where you’re in no hurry to arrive…We suggest silencing your phone, getting out there and staying curious!

Summer is the perfect time to hit reset – on your habits, your meals, and your mindset. With longer days and warmer weather, there’s a natural boost in motivation to feel good and live well. A “summer refresh” doesn’t have to mean a total lifestyle overhaul; sometimes it’s the smallest shifts that can make the biggest difference in the way we feel and move throughout our days.

Here are five simple wellness tips to help you recharge this season – plus links to fresh, nourishing recipes that make healthy living feel effortless.

Hydrate with Purpose

Between the sun, heat, and activity, your body needs extra hydration in the summer months. And water doesn’t have to be boring!

Try this: Add citrus slices, mint, cucumber, or berries to your water for flavor and antioxidants (we love this ginger/peach infusion) OR freeze herbal teas into ice cubes for a fun twist and get hydrated!

Eat Colorfully

Seasonal produce is at its peak in summer. Take advantage of it! The more colors on your plate, it is likely that the more variety of nutrients you’re getting.

Try this: Make simple swaps like zucchini noodles or cauliflower rice.

Move Naturally

You don’t have to hit the gym to stay active. Summer is the perfect excuse to get outside and move in ways that feel fun and not forced.

Try this: Morning walks, post-dinner bike rides, or a weekend paddle boarding session. Stretch outside! Sunshine is an instant mood booster. Can’t make time for these? Try this brief sundown virtual yoga session.

Prioritize Rest

While summer is often filled with activity, don’t forget the value of slowing down. Rest is part of wellness too.

Try this: Embrace short midday breaks – reading, meditating, or napping.

Nourish Through Connection

Wellness includes social health and longer days mean more chances to reconnect with friends, nature and yourself!

Try this: Host a potluck picnic with friends!

June is Men’s Mental Health Month, a time to acknowledge a struggle that many men face quietly. Despite the prevalence of mental health issues among men, societal norms and stigma surrounding mental health struggles continue to prevent open conversations and timely help. This month also honors fathers and the important role they can play in their families. As we celebrate Father’s Day, let it be a time to expand the conversation of their mental wellbeing and demonstrate our love and compassion.

Fathers and non-fathers alike, men overall are disproportionately affected by mental health challenges, but are far less likely to seek support. The pressure to appear strong, self-reliant, or unemotional often isolate men during times when social connection or intervention could be most valuable.

Men die by suicide nearly four times more often than women in the U.S., with the highest rates among middle-aged white men (CDC, 2023)

A 2021 survey by the American Psychological Association found that only 1 in 4 men had spoken to a mental health professional, and many reported feeling that seeking help would make them appear weak

Many fathers feel the pressure of balancing work, parenting and social expectations of masculinity, which can lead to chronic stress and subsequent burnout

When dads are supported and mentally healthy, the impact on children and families is powerful. Engaged and emotionally regulated fathers have been linked to improved cognitive and emotional outcomes in children, better academic achievement and lower risk of behavioral issues (“Fathers Play Important Role In Children’s Lives”, Texas A&M University).

In celebration of men and fathers everywhere, let’s honor the data collected in this study – let us speak frankly about men’s health and show gratitude to the men in our lives in June and every month of the year! By talking about our mental health struggles and continuing to break the silence surrounding negative emotions many of us experience, the more we contribute to building a world where every man knows it’s okay to not be okay.

Many companies offer support for all employees in the area of mental wellbeing. Take a moment to review your company’s benefits and discover how you can be supported. SimplaFYI offers wellbeing programs to employers, many supporting mental wellbeing.

Motherhood is a journey marked by love, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication. Yet behind the warm smiles and comforting embraces lies a remarkable reservoir of mental strength, emotional resilience, and moral integrity. While society often celebrates the visible aspects of mothering, science is beginning to uncover the profound psychological and neurological forces that power this essential role.

Modern motherhood involves more than physical caregiving. It includes a substantial mental and emotional burden—what psychologists call the “mental load.” This, often disproportionate, cognitive labor can lead to decision fatigue, chronic stress, and emotional burnout, especially in the absence of adequate support systems.

Maternal Mental Health is a public health priority. Postpartum depression and anxiety are common conditions. The World Health Organization estimates that about 15% of mothers suffer from postpartum depression (WHO, 2022). Hormonal shifts, sleep deprivation, and identity transitions can contribute to feelings of overwhelm, sadness, and disconnection. Left unaddressed, these conditions can impair not only maternal health but child development and family dynamics.

Motherhood also changes women’s brains! A landmark study in Nature Neuroscience found that pregnancy reduces gray matter in regions of the brain related to social cognition and empathy, enhancing a mother’s capacity to read and respond to her child’s cues (Hoekzema et al., 2017).

Mothers and those in equivalent caregiver roles often believe they need to “do it all”, forgetting to prioritize their own needs. What steps can mothers struggling with their wellbeing take?

Prioritize Small Acts of Self-Care

Even 10 minutes a day for oneself can reduce stress and improve emotional regulation.

Tip: Start with deep breathing, journaling, or a short walk.

Don’t Isolate — Connect with Others

Social support is a major protective factor against depression and burnout.

Tip: Call a friend, join a mom group, or attend a local support circle.

Ask for Help Without Guilt

You don’t have to do it all — asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.

Tip: Delegate chores, involve your partner, or consider a childcare swap with a trusted friend.

Set Gentle Boundaries

Overcommitment can drain your energy. It’s okay to say no or scale back.

Tip: Limit multitasking and focus on one priority at a time.

Seek Professional Help When Needed

Mental health matters — therapy or counseling can be life-changing.

Tip: Look for a therapist who specializes in maternal mental health.

SimplaFYI celebrates all parents and encourages a pause to reflect on what YOU need to support your wellbeing.

When the world around you feels like it's closing in on you, how do you regain your balance?

The post Emotional Equilibrium first appeared on Simplafyi.

In our fast-paced world, managing emotions isn’t just about staying calm—it’s about protecting our mental and physical health. Emotional regulatory equilibrium, or the ability to maintain emotional balance, is now recognized as a key factor in overall well-being.

But what does science say about it?

🧠 What Is Emotional Regulatory Equilibrium?

Emotional regulation refers to how we manage, experience, and express emotions—especially during times of stress or uncertainty. When this regulation is in balance, we’re more likely to feel grounded, make thoughtful decisions, and bounce back from life’s challenges with greater ease.

🔬 What the Research Tells Us

Studies consistently show that emotional regulation has a significant impact on our well-being. For example, mindfulness has been proven to enhance emotional control and awareness. A 2017 review by Guendelman and colleagues found that practicing mindfulness helps individuals become more aware of their emotional responses and more skilled at managing them—even under pressure. There is power in knowing your emotional triggers!

Emotional regulation isn’t just about minimizing negative emotions. A 2024 study by Tsujimoto and colleagues emphasized the importance of regulating both positive and negative emotions. Our bodies reflect this balance, too. One of the most reliable physiological markers of emotional regulation is Heart Rate Variability, or HRV. Research by Thayer et al. (2009) revealed that individuals with higher HRV tend to have better stress resilience and greater mental clarity. It’s a sign that the nervous system is functioning in a flexible and adaptive way—an internal indicator of emotional stability.

People who are able to manage the full spectrum of their emotional experiences—embracing joy and coping with discomfort—are more likely to enjoy strong mental and physical health.

💡 Strengthening Emotional Balance

Emotional regulatory equilibrium is a skill anyone can develop. It begins with small, intentional changes: paying attention to how you feel, slowing down before reacting, and reflecting on what triggers emotional patterns. Practices like journaling or mindful breathing can help ground you in the present moment and foster a sense of emotional clarity.

In today’s busy world, it’s easy to sacrifice sleep to get more done. Did you know quality sleep is essential for both mental and physical health? Here are some key benefits of prioritizing sleep:

Boosts Brain Function

During sleep, the brain organizes memories, learning, and focus. The brain organizes memories, strengthens connections, and clears out waste, improving problem-solving and creativity. Sleep deprivation can impair cognitive function, making us less focused and slower in decision-making.

Supports Emotional Well-being

Good sleep helps regulate emotions and stress, studies show that sleep deprivation increases emotional reactivity and the risk of mood disorders like anxiety and depression.

Improves and Enhances Physical Health and Performance

While we sleep our body repairs itself, strengthening our immune system and balancing hormones. Lack of sleep weakens immunity and increases the risk of conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

Regulates Metabolism and Promotes Longevity

Adequate sleep helps control hunger hormones, preventing overeating and weight gain. Sleep deprivation can lead to increased appetite, especially for high-calorie foods.

Sleep isn’t a luxury – it is an essential facet of our overall health & wellbeing. Prioritize your rest to improve brain function, emotional balance, physical health and more.

Blue Zones: Honoring Ancient Practices

Ever wondered why some people seem to defy age and live to 100 or more with a smile on their face? Some secrets may lie in the simple and magical regions known as Blue Zones.

Blue Zones are five regions around the world where the highest percentage of inhabitants live to be 100. These areas were first identified by author and researcher Dan Buettner, who worked with National Geographic to study why people in these regions lived longer than the global average.

The five Blue Zones are:

Okinawa, Japan: Home to the longest-lived women, Okinawa residents often live into their 90s or 100s. The culture emphasizes strong social networks, movement, and a plant-based diet.

Sardinia, Italy: In the mountainous regions of Sardinia, particularly among men, there is a high rate of centenarians. The Sardinians’ diet is rich in vegetables, whole grains, and olive oil. There is community, laughter, and movement.

Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica: This region has a low rate of middle-age mortality, and people here tend to live past 100. The Nicoyans focus on family and strong social bonds, their diet includes beans, corn, and tropical fruits.

Ikaria, Greece: Ikarians are known for their low rates of chronic diseases like heart disease and dementia. A Mediterranean diet and an active lifestyle are key to their longevity.

Loma Linda, California, USA: Home to a large population of Seventh-day Adventists, who live 10 years longer than the average American. They follow a vegetarian diet, avoid alcohol and tobacco, and place a strong emphasis on community and spiritual wellbeing.

Simplafyi is proud to introduce a new Blue Zones inspired workshop, led by a board-certified physician in Internal Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine to our Program Catalog. This hour-long workshop considers how lifestyle choices affect health, happiness, wellbeing, and longevity. Learn more here.

Buettner’s studies illuminated how nutrition, community, movement, purpose, and spirituality contributed to the health & wellbeing of people living in Blue Zones. Treating health and wellbeing as a holistic experience helps to create a balanced lifestyle that nurtures the body, mind, and spirit.
