Empowerment is a core component of health and wellness. Keeping one’s metaphorical cup full and remaining resilient through life’s many ups and downs is essential. When women feel empowered to speak up — whether about their passions, dreams, hopes, needs, goals, or struggles — they are more likely to make choices that improve their overall well-being and inspire those around them.

For generations, many women have balanced careers, caregiving, and personal responsibilities while often putting themselves last. Empowerment means encouraging women to prioritize their own health without guilt. Small actions, such as scheduling regular checkups, getting enough rest, setting boundaries, and practicing self-care, can have a lasting impact on both physical and emotional health.

Strong support systems also play a major role in women’s wellness. Conversations among mothers, daughters, grandmothers, mentors, neighbors, and friends can create safe spaces for sharing experiences and advice. Seeking out these types of communities, whether among girlfriends, family members, or new friends, can expose women to resources or support they may not have realized they needed, while also providing a sense of belonging. Socializing and sharing with one another helps women feel heard, valued, and empowered to succeed. These honest discussions also help younger generations learn about resilience, confidence, and the importance of advocating for themselves in school, work, relationships, and healthcare settings.

In our turbulent world, women’s voices remain essential in shaping healthier communities, and so does their resilience. Empowered women who can cope with change and conflict encourage one another to pursue goals in education, leadership, and beyond while breaking down outdated stereotypes. By supporting women’s wellbeing and uplifting one another, we create a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

When was the last time you were curious about the woman or women you love in your life? Lift them up and learn by asking some of the questions below. Who knows what you might discover?

What life experience taught you the most about your strength or resilience?

How do you take care of your mental and emotional health during difficult times?

What advice would you give younger women about confidence and self-worth?

Who or what inspired you most growing up, and why?

What is one lesson about health or self-care you wish more people understood?

In an age of distraction, attention is one of the most valuable gifts we have to offer. However, we rarely think of it as a form of nourishment, feeding and fueling others and ourselves. What if we began to consider focused attention the way we consider food: as something vital, shared, and impactful?

Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Han asserted, “The most precious gift we can offer anyone is our attention. When mindfulness embraces those we love.” What if we thought of every glance, pause or listening ear as an act towards feeding someone’s spirit.

Psychology supports this train of thought. Research in attachment theory and child development consistently shows that focused and responsive attention is foundational to healthy emotional development…and it doesn’t stop in childhood! Adults also thrive when they feel seen and heard. Still, many of us move through our days half listening, multitasking our way through moments begging for more presence. And this is not because we don’t care – it is often because we are running on empty ourselves!

So how do we replenish our attention so it becomes nourishing again? Make a concentrated effort to tune back into your day. A few minutes of mindful breathing – or listening – can serve as a grounding break from everyday monotony. We love a quick lunch-break stretch outside…an opportunity to swing our arms and sway, feeling October’s cool breeze and listening to the rustling of the crisping leaves on the ground and in the trees.

Re-engage. When with those you love, turn off your phone, make eye contact, and listen without interrupting or wait to speak. Focused attention begins with undivided presence. If you’re drifting, call it out! Apologize and suggest a meaningful activity together, recommitment can start small. Try something simple like a walk or meal without screens.

Just as our bodies need fuel, our relationships thrive on presence, curiosity, and care. In a world full of noise, choosing to truly see and hear those close to you is one of the best things you can do to nourish yourself and others!

We all carry a story, one shaped by our experiences, challenges, and dreams. But the real question is: how are you telling it, and what impact does that have on your wellbeing?

Research shows that the way we frame our personal narratives matters. People who view their struggles as turning points for growth often report greater resilience and lower levels of depression (Psychological Science, 2013). Even children who know and share family stories develop higher self-esteem and stronger coping skills, simply by reflecting on and retelling those stories (Emory University, 2010). Stories, it seems, don’t just explain our past, but rather, they shape our health in the present.

When the story we tell ourselves is one of failure or limitation, we reinforce feelings of stress. Nearly three in four adults report experiencing overwhelming stress at least once in the past month (American Psychological Association, 2023). But reframing those same experiences as lessons rather than endings has been linked to reduced cortisol levels and improved immune function (Frontiers in Psychology, 2016).

The benefits extend into every area of life. Journaling about personal experiences has been shown to improve mood, sleep, and confidence (Advances in Psychiatric Treatment, 2005). In the workplace, confidence in one’s abilities correlates strongly with success: employees who believe in themselves set more ambitious goals, persist longer, and perform better overall (Journal of Applied Psychology, 2002). In other words, every time you reflect, write, or reframe your experiences, you’re not only telling your story – you’re shaping your health, wellbeing, and future.

The beauty of it all is that your story isn’t fixed. You get to revise it and every moment of gratitude, acceptance, or understanding can become part of that unfolding narrative. So ask yourself: what story am I telling, and is it one that supports the life and health I want to create?

A few ways to start rewriting your story:

Reframe setbacks as lessons rather than failures

Journal to process and reflect on your experiences

Share your story with others to strengthen connection

Recognize small healthy habits as part of your larger narrative

Could your team use help reframing their story? SimplaFYI can help. Check out our programs and services to discover how.

The post What’s Your Story and How Are You Telling it? first appeared on Simplafyi.

When the world around you feels like it's closing in on you, how do you regain your balance?

The post Emotional Equilibrium first appeared on Simplafyi.

In our fast-paced world, managing emotions isn’t just about staying calm—it’s about protecting our mental and physical health. Emotional regulatory equilibrium, or the ability to maintain emotional balance, is now recognized as a key factor in overall well-being.

But what does science say about it?

🧠 What Is Emotional Regulatory Equilibrium?

Emotional regulation refers to how we manage, experience, and express emotions—especially during times of stress or uncertainty. When this regulation is in balance, we’re more likely to feel grounded, make thoughtful decisions, and bounce back from life’s challenges with greater ease.

🔬 What the Research Tells Us

Studies consistently show that emotional regulation has a significant impact on our well-being. For example, mindfulness has been proven to enhance emotional control and awareness. A 2017 review by Guendelman and colleagues found that practicing mindfulness helps individuals become more aware of their emotional responses and more skilled at managing them—even under pressure. There is power in knowing your emotional triggers!

Emotional regulation isn’t just about minimizing negative emotions. A 2024 study by Tsujimoto and colleagues emphasized the importance of regulating both positive and negative emotions. Our bodies reflect this balance, too. One of the most reliable physiological markers of emotional regulation is Heart Rate Variability, or HRV. Research by Thayer et al. (2009) revealed that individuals with higher HRV tend to have better stress resilience and greater mental clarity. It’s a sign that the nervous system is functioning in a flexible and adaptive way—an internal indicator of emotional stability.

People who are able to manage the full spectrum of their emotional experiences—embracing joy and coping with discomfort—are more likely to enjoy strong mental and physical health.

💡 Strengthening Emotional Balance

Emotional regulatory equilibrium is a skill anyone can develop. It begins with small, intentional changes: paying attention to how you feel, slowing down before reacting, and reflecting on what triggers emotional patterns. Practices like journaling or mindful breathing can help ground you in the present moment and foster a sense of emotional clarity.

Connecting with a coach, therapist, or wellness practitioner can provide tools and support to build long-term resilience. Over time, these strategies help shift our emotional responses from reactive to responsive, creating space for greater peace, confidence, and authenticity.

When we learn to navigate our emotions with awareness and care, we open the door to a healthier, more centered life.

Did you know virtual mindfulness-based practices were helpful in relieving chronic pain in Veterans? In a study of veterans with moderate-to-severe chronic pain, 8-week virtual group or self-paced mindfulness-based interventions were more helpful than usual care in improving pain-related function. This study, which was part of the Pain Management Collaborative (PMC), a large-scale effort to assess non-drug treatments for pain in the military and veterans’ health care systems, was supported by the PMC Coordinating Center, which is funded by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health and published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

The researchers who conducted this study concluded that these two scalable, relatively low-resource interventions could help accelerate the implementation of non-drug pain treatment in health care systems.

Psychological safety, defined as the belief that one will not be penalized or humiliated for speaking up or making mistakes, fosters an environment where individuals can express themselves without fear (Edmondson, 1999). This culture not only enhances collaboration but also supports mental well-being, encouraging people to share their challenges and seek help.

Psychological safety is essential for promoting mental wellbeing because it creates an atmosphere where individuals feel valued and understood. Teams that cultivate psychological safety report higher levels of engagement and lower instances of burnout (Newman et al., 2017). When employees feel safe to communicate their thoughts and emotions, they are more likely to seek help when needed, reducing the stigma often associated with mental health issues.

Conversely, workplaces lacking psychological safety can contribute to increased stress and anxiety.

Consider the following Self-Care Strategies:

Promote Open Communication: Encourage team members to share their thoughts and feelings regularly. Regular check-ins can create a safe space for dialogue about mental health. Leaders should model vulnerability by sharing their own challenges and how they cope.

Encourage Feedback: Create a feedback-rich environment where individuals feel comfortable providing and receiving constructive criticism. This not only enhances performance but also reinforces the idea that everyone’s input is valued.

Implement Mindfulness Practices: Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation and deep breathing exercises, can help individuals manage stress and anxiety. Organizations can offer mindfulness workshops or resources to encourage employees to practice self-care.

Provide Mental Health Resources: Ensure that employees have access to mental health resources, including counseling services, workshops, and educational materials. Raising awareness about available support can encourage individuals to seek help when needed.

Encourage Work-Life Balance: Promote policies that support work-life balance, such as flexible working hours and time off for mental health days. When individuals feel supported in their personal lives, they are more likely to thrive in their professional environments.

As we reflect on World Mental Health Day this month, let us commit to building psychological safety in our communities and workplaces, recognizing that mental wellbeing is just as important as physical health.

To the casual observer, golf may not seem like a risky activity. However, most golf enthusiasts know that the sport involves explosive swings, precise positions and motions, and persistent low-impact cardiovascular activity that can take a toll on even the most conditioned athlete. Even novice and occasional golfers can experience acute injury and debilitating pain if they’re not careful. Fortunately, integrative care practices can help you prevent and recover from golf-related injuries.

Types of Golfing Injuries

According to the Golf Channel, the top 10 golf-related injuries include back and neck pain; elbow tendinitis (otherwise known as golfer’s and tennis elbow); hand, finger, and wrist pain; rotator cuff injury; knee and hip injuries; and foot and ankle pain. Although injuries are often the result of mistakes such as poor swing mechanics, not warming up enough, and incorrect grip and setup, they can also be due to rotational stress on the spine as well as overuse of certain joints and muscles — what’s known as repetitive strain injury.

What Is Repetitive Strain Injury?

The Cleveland Clinic defines repetitive strain injury as damage to your muscles, tendons, or nerves caused by repetitive motions and constant use. When you consider this definition, it’s easy to see how avid golfers — who continually work to hone the perfect swing — run the risk of developing chronic problems. Over the long term, repetitive strain injuries can result in potentially serious issues, including stress fractures, ganglion cysts, bursitis, and herniated discs.

How Can Integrative Care Help?

Regardless of whether you’re a pro or novice golfer, integrative care practitioners can help you develop personalized practices to both prevent and recover from injury. Here’s how:

Yoga can help build stamina and flexibility while strengthening the core muscles that are so critical to a golf swing. Moreover, through breath work, yoga can help develop the calm and focused mind that contribute to game-winning putts.

Mindfulness is another way to further cultivate mental strength and concentration. By training your mind to focus on the present, mindfulness can help you tune out everyday worries and in-the-moment distractions on the fairway.

Massage and chiropractic care can help your muscles and joints recover from a long day on the golf course and can treat and repair acute injury.

Hey, You… Yeah, You…You’re a Superstar, You’re Glorious, and You Can Touch the Sky

My mama told me when I was young, “We are all born superstars”
She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on in the glass of her boudoir
“There’s nothing wrong with loving who you are”

She said “’Cause He made you perfect, babe”

Born This Way

Lady Gaga

Most of us are familiar with these Lady Gaga lyrics, which often inspire shamelessly letting loose with our finest dance moves in the middle of our living rooms. In many circles, Gaga’s record-breaking song has become an anthem to self-acceptance and loving who you are (as well as whoever you want). Accepting yourself — strengths, challenges, beauty marks, warts, and all — is the foundation of a strong mental wellbeing, yet for many, it’s nearly impossible to achieve. Why?

The reason, arguably, is that we live in a world that is increasingly obsessed with a singular definition of perfection. Whether it’s presenting a flawless (edited) image of oneself on social media; outspending one’s earnings to own the most up-to-date symbols of the 21st-Century “American Dream”; or striving to make zero mistakes (and, therefore, having to own up and maybe even — *gasp* — apologize), the pressure to be perfect feels relentless. Accepting that we are all — each and every one of us — flawed human beings is practically viewed as counterculture in our society. But it’s critical to our mental health, both individually and collectively.

What Is Self-Acceptance?

Harvard Medical School defines self-acceptance as “an individual’s acceptance of all of his/her attributes, positive or negative.” It includes not only accepting one’s body and appearance, but also exhibiting resilience in the face of criticism and believing in one’s abilities and capabilities. Achieving self-acceptance is challenging, but it can be especially difficult for those of us who had a tough childhood or are members of a marginalized community. (For those who may not be among these groups, consider how hard it would be to accept yourself when the world constantly sends you messages that you are “less than.”)

May is Mental Health Month, which presents an ideal opportunity to learn more about self-acceptance and discover ways to both manifest and maintain it.

“We are not born feeling inadequate,” reads a blog on the National Alliance on Mental Illness’s web site. “Life’s experiences and emotions create that sense within us in a variety of ways.” The article, in which a counselor describes how she helped an otherwise successful father explore nagging feelings of inadequacy, states that one way to build self-acceptance is to address internalized, negative beliefs separately from our identity. In other words, acknowledge that our feelings of “not enough” were learned — they are not truly who we are.

Other tips from the article include:

Connect to the part of us that feels bad and offer it compassion, like we would for our child, partner, colleague, friend, or pet.

Practice deep belly breathing to calm our nervous system.

Exercise to generate positive feelings and create a sense of empowerment and accomplishment.

Remember the phrase: “Compare and Despair!” Catch yourself making comparisons to others and STOP!
