Empowerment is a core component of health and wellness. Keeping one’s metaphorical cup full and remaining resilient through life’s many ups and downs is essential. When women feel empowered to speak up — whether about their passions, dreams, hopes, needs, goals, or struggles — they are more likely to make choices that improve their overall well-being and inspire those around them.

For generations, many women have balanced careers, caregiving, and personal responsibilities while often putting themselves last. Empowerment means encouraging women to prioritize their own health without guilt. Small actions, such as scheduling regular checkups, getting enough rest, setting boundaries, and practicing self-care, can have a lasting impact on both physical and emotional health.

Strong support systems also play a major role in women’s wellness. Conversations among mothers, daughters, grandmothers, mentors, neighbors, and friends can create safe spaces for sharing experiences and advice. Seeking out these types of communities, whether among girlfriends, family members, or new friends, can expose women to resources or support they may not have realized they needed, while also providing a sense of belonging. Socializing and sharing with one another helps women feel heard, valued, and empowered to succeed. These honest discussions also help younger generations learn about resilience, confidence, and the importance of advocating for themselves in school, work, relationships, and healthcare settings.

In our turbulent world, women’s voices remain essential in shaping healthier communities, and so does their resilience. Empowered women who can cope with change and conflict encourage one another to pursue goals in education, leadership, and beyond while breaking down outdated stereotypes. By supporting women’s wellbeing and uplifting one another, we create a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

When was the last time you were curious about the woman or women you love in your life? Lift them up and learn by asking some of the questions below. Who knows what you might discover?

What life experience taught you the most about your strength or resilience?

How do you take care of your mental and emotional health during difficult times?

What advice would you give younger women about confidence and self-worth?

Who or what inspired you most growing up, and why?

It’s a mindfulness practice and gentle form of exercise – a way to give your brain and body the reset they crave.

When the world around you feels like it's closing in on you, how do you regain your balance?

The post Emotional Equilibrium first appeared on Simplafyi.

In our fast-paced world, managing emotions isn’t just about staying calm—it’s about protecting our mental and physical health. Emotional regulatory equilibrium, or the ability to maintain emotional balance, is now recognized as a key factor in overall well-being.

But what does science say about it?

🧠 What Is Emotional Regulatory Equilibrium?

Emotional regulation refers to how we manage, experience, and express emotions—especially during times of stress or uncertainty. When this regulation is in balance, we’re more likely to feel grounded, make thoughtful decisions, and bounce back from life’s challenges with greater ease.

🔬 What the Research Tells Us

Studies consistently show that emotional regulation has a significant impact on our well-being. For example, mindfulness has been proven to enhance emotional control and awareness. A 2017 review by Guendelman and colleagues found that practicing mindfulness helps individuals become more aware of their emotional responses and more skilled at managing them—even under pressure. There is power in knowing your emotional triggers!

Emotional regulation isn’t just about minimizing negative emotions. A 2024 study by Tsujimoto and colleagues emphasized the importance of regulating both positive and negative emotions. Our bodies reflect this balance, too. One of the most reliable physiological markers of emotional regulation is Heart Rate Variability, or HRV. Research by Thayer et al. (2009) revealed that individuals with higher HRV tend to have better stress resilience and greater mental clarity. It’s a sign that the nervous system is functioning in a flexible and adaptive way—an internal indicator of emotional stability.

People who are able to manage the full spectrum of their emotional experiences—embracing joy and coping with discomfort—are more likely to enjoy strong mental and physical health.

💡 Strengthening Emotional Balance

Emotional regulatory equilibrium is a skill anyone can develop. It begins with small, intentional changes: paying attention to how you feel, slowing down before reacting, and reflecting on what triggers emotional patterns. Practices like journaling or mindful breathing can help ground you in the present moment and foster a sense of emotional clarity.

Connecting with a coach, therapist, or wellness practitioner can provide tools and support to build long-term resilience. Over time, these strategies help shift our emotional responses from reactive to responsive, creating space for greater peace, confidence, and authenticity.

When we learn to navigate our emotions with awareness and care, we open the door to a healthier, more centered life. It’s never too late to begin.

If you’re ready to explore how emotional balance can transform your life—or the lives of your team—let’s connect. Schedule a discovery call. Check out our catalog.

When a New Year arrives many of us focus on resolving to add new commitments for better health, advancing our career or a relationship. It's just as valuable to pause and identify areas of your life that you want to release or let go of. Our wellbeing depends on it.

The post Release first appeared on Simplafyi.

The new year is a perfect time to reflect on what you’ve accomplished and what you’d like to achieve in the year ahead. It is also a perfect time to consider what you would like to release. Stress and anxiety often come from holding onto unproductive habits, toxic relationships, and overwhelming commitments. These drain our energy and elevate cortisol levels, a hormone tied to stress that, when persistently high, can harm both mental and physical health.

Chronic stress triggers cortisol, which can lead to anxiety, disrupted sleep, weight gain, and even a weakened immune system. By eliminating stressors that no longer serve us, we help restore balance to our bodies and minds allowing for more peace and focus for the things that bring us joy.

Evaluate Your Commitments: Cut back on obligations that drain you and leave little room for self-care.

Focus on Positive Relationships: Spend time with people who lift you up and create boundaries with those who cause stress.

Shift Your Mindset: Incorporate mindfulness to reduce negative thinking and lower cortisol.

By releasing what no longer serves you, you create space for peace, joy, and a calmer, more balanced life. Wishing you a happy and healthy year ahead!

Hey, You… Yeah, You…You’re a Superstar, You’re Glorious, and You Can Touch the Sky

My mama told me when I was young, “We are all born superstars”
She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on in the glass of her boudoir
“There’s nothing wrong with loving who you are”

She said “’Cause He made you perfect, babe”

Born This Way

Lady Gaga

Most of us are familiar with these Lady Gaga lyrics, which often inspire shamelessly letting loose with our finest dance moves in the middle of our living rooms. In many circles, Gaga’s record-breaking song has become an anthem to self-acceptance and loving who you are (as well as whoever you want). Accepting yourself — strengths, challenges, beauty marks, warts, and all — is the foundation of a strong mental wellbeing, yet for many, it’s nearly impossible to achieve. Why?

The reason, arguably, is that we live in a world that is increasingly obsessed with a singular definition of perfection. Whether it’s presenting a flawless (edited) image of oneself on social media; outspending one’s earnings to own the most up-to-date symbols of the 21st-Century “American Dream”; or striving to make zero mistakes (and, therefore, having to own up and maybe even — *gasp* — apologize), the pressure to be perfect feels relentless. Accepting that we are all — each and every one of us — flawed human beings is practically viewed as counterculture in our society. But it’s critical to our mental health, both individually and collectively.

What Is Self-Acceptance?

Harvard Medical School defines self-acceptance as “an individual’s acceptance of all of his/her attributes, positive or negative.” It includes not only accepting one’s body and appearance, but also exhibiting resilience in the face of criticism and believing in one’s abilities and capabilities. Achieving self-acceptance is challenging, but it can be especially difficult for those of us who had a tough childhood or are members of a marginalized community. (For those who may not be among these groups, consider how hard it would be to accept yourself when the world constantly sends you messages that you are “less than.”)

May is Mental Health Month, which presents an ideal opportunity to learn more about self-acceptance and discover ways to both manifest and maintain it.

“We are not born feeling inadequate,” reads a blog on the National Alliance on Mental Illness’s web site. “Life’s experiences and emotions create that sense within us in a variety of ways.” The article, in which a counselor describes how she helped an otherwise successful father explore nagging feelings of inadequacy, states that one way to build self-acceptance is to address internalized, negative beliefs separately from our identity. In other words, acknowledge that our feelings of “not enough” were learned — they are not truly who we are.

Other tips from the article include:

Connect to the part of us that feels bad and offer it compassion, like we would for our child, partner, colleague, friend, or pet.

Practice deep belly breathing to calm our nervous system.

Exercise to generate positive feelings and create a sense of empowerment and accomplishment.

Remember the phrase: “Compare and Despair!” Catch yourself making comparisons to others and STOP!

Did you know how beneficial getting your hands dirty is to your wellbeing? From stress relief to exercise, outdoor yard time does more for you than you may think!

This time of year, those of us in the Northern Hemisphere emerge from our cocoons to a world resembling an Impressionist painting, as the dull greys and browns of winter become stippled with dots of chartreuse, red, pink, white, and green. And once the buds begin to pop in earnest, the pastel hues quickly become a rich color palette consuming Mother Nature’s canvas — and we humans head to our closets, sheds, and garages to pull out the necessary tools for working with her unique artistic medium.

This spring, whether your creative goal is a native garden for pollinators, pots of herbs on your balcony or patio, a patch of fresh vegetables, or a perfectly manicured lawn, consider pausing to offer a moment of gratitude for this one activity that brings so many health benefits.

Physical exercise

Gardening and yard work can be a full-body workout. The continuous lifting, pulling, bending, stretching, and balancing required to keep nature in check offer all-in-one benefits of strength training, cardio, and flexibility workouts. A plus is that gardening and yard work exercises can be modified to accommodate the needs of young and old alike. For tips on how to make your landscaping chores more beneficial and less painful, check out GardenFit on your local PBS network.

Vitamin D

Working outside in the sunshine brings a much-needed dose of Vitamin D to the system. Not only does Vitamin D contribute to bone and muscle health, it has also been shown to reduce cancer cell growth, stimulate the immune system, and reduce inflammation. But beware of too much of a good thing: Limit the time spent in direct sunlight without sunscreen and a hat.

Stress reduction

The physical exercise and sunshine that gardening and yard work afford also provide positive mental health benefits. These activities have been shown to promote mindfulness — the state of forgetting past and future worries and concentrating fully on the present — and even “flow state,” which psychologists describe as a mental state in which an individual is completely absorbed by the task at hand, so much so that they lose track of time and think of little else but their activity. One study found that working in the yard or garden just two to three days a week results in better well-being and lower stress levels overall.

You don’t need the talent of Monet or Renoir to be a master of your own natural world. Just a little dirt, a trowel, some seeds or seedlings, and a pot or a small patch of land can lead to months of improved health and happiness.

When you face a difficult or important decision, how do you approach it? Do you conduct research and talk to friends, family members, and maybe even an unbiased expert or two? Do you list the pros and cons, or if you’re really analytical, create a weighted-average spreadsheet?

All of these can be key steps in drawing a well-considered conclusion. But don’t neglect the value of checking in with your heart – and sometimes even following it.

Heart = Gut = Intuition

There is some science to support following your heart, although the scientific community doesn’t typically use that phrase. Instead, they refer to “intuition.”

Researchers have been studying intuition for decades. Some say that “going with your gut” carries risks associated with unconscious biases, while others contend that intuition is actually an amalgamation of our life’s experiences mixed with learning and intelligence and can often be quite useful. Regardless of where one falls on this debate, one thing is certain: Following our heart can help us ensure that our decisions are in line with our deepest desires and values.

Getting to Know Your Inner Voice(s)

In her essay, “How to Tune Into the Voice Within,” acclaimed writer and life coach Martha Beck describes her own inner voices – one named Fang and the other, Buddy. Fang is the meticulously groomed, always punctual advisor who Beck relied upon as a young adult to guide her every professional decision. Buddy, on the other hand, is more of a laid-back surfer dude. She writes:

“When clients tell me they need to find their ‘inner voice,’ I suspect they’re already listening to one: a loud, logical, convincing Fang-voice that echoes teachers, parents, priests, and angry personal trainers. You have no problem hearing this voice: the problem is, its counsel rarely leads to fulfillment. You sense there’s someone else knocking around in your psyche: someone whose counsel might make you happy – the kind of wise, primordial self I named Buddy.”

She says Buddy is “true inner wisdom.” The following quotes are how Beck describes that inner wisdom.

“Wisdom is sensory, not verbal”

Wisdom is, indeed, that gut feeling you get when you sense something isn’t right – or when something is right.

After taking all the logical, rational steps described above – from conducting research to talking to trusted advisors – check in with yourself before acting on a decision and see how you feel. Just sit with any conclusions you’ve drawn and ponder. Notice sensations in your body. Does your forehead wrinkle a bit? Do you feel pulsing in your temple? Does the space between your shoulders tighten or does your stomach feel a bit queasy? Alternatively, do you feel at ease, content, maybe even joyful? Such feelings might be your heart speaking to you.

“Wisdom is calm, not fearful”

Sometimes our heart is drowned out by the cacophony of other voices in our head – the ones who remind us over and over again what we “should” do and warn us at every opportunity about the risks we face if we don’t listen to them. “You’ll fail.” “Friends/family members won’t like it.” “Your boss won’t understand.” If these messages play on a continual loop in your mind, remember that inner wisdom speaks best in peaceful settings. In this case, meditating can help quiet the shouldas and the whaddabouts working so hard to silence your heart.

“Wisdom is chosen, not forced”

Your heart will not brow-beat, guilt, or shame you into a following a particular path. In fact, it is generally quite passive. It will sit and wait patiently for you to hear its message. Then you will need to choose whether to listen.

Your Heart Will Not Always Lead You to Success

The objective of listening to your heart is not perfection. We are all human, and we all make mistakes. Instead, the goal is peace. By following your heart when you choose a particular path – even if it leads to a less-than-ideal outcome – you will know that your decision was guided by what matters most to you. And that will always leave you feeling as though you did your best.

Have you begun your New Year's "starts"? We often begin our year with defined goals to be better in this or that. SimplaFYI invites you to give yourself some grace and embrace a different way to think about it.

The post Abundance in the New Year first appeared on Simplafyi.

Take a Breath Before Taking a Step

In the United States, we are encouraged to set goals and pursue them, make lists and complete them. Achievement-chasing is a key trait in American culture, and it’s especially apparent this time of year when the pressure is on to be better, do better, and achieve even more. However, a new year is also a perfect opportunity to slow down … breathe deep … then reflect, reset, and renew.

Reflect

In his book, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose, spiritual teacher Echkart Tolle wrote, “Acknowledging the good that you already have in life is the foundation for all abundance.”1 In the cold, dark days of January, it can be easy to dwell on how life could be better or different somehow. Why not, instead, spend some time observing what’s good in your life right now? Just simply notice.

What in your home, workplace, and community do you appreciate the most? What makes you content, brings you peace, or inspires happiness? It could be playing a game with a child, losing yourself in an engaging novel, laughing with a colleague at the water cooler, slurping a hot bowl of soup, or sharing a warm hug with a beloved person or pet. Whatever it is, take some time to reflect on it and feel the gratitude deeply, reveling in the knowledge that it’s already a wonderful part of your life.

Reset

With those positive images at the forefront of your mind, next begin to think about how to reset for the new year. In recent years, life coaches and others have encouraged a shift in focus from making resolutions to setting intentions. While a resolution is a narrow, specific objective such as losing weight or spending less money, an intention is a broader guiding principle used to influence daily decision-making. Examples include:

Exhibiting more optimism

Striving to live a healthier lifestyle

Strengthening relationships

Managing money according to values

Because intentions are less defined, they tend not to provoke feelings of failure when a specific goal isn’t reached. Action plans are still important, but intentions are more about the journey than the result. For example, there are many ways to live a healthier lifestyle, so if changing your diet isn’t something you want to do right now, you might start with an intention to move more on a daily basis, which might include walking the dog, taking a dance class, or playing tennis with a friend.

Writing down a few intentions for 2023 is an ideal way to reset both mind and body, preparing yourself to receive more good things to come.

Renew

Finally, renew your commitment to building on what you already have. Continue reflecting on and doing all the things that bring you peace and joy now and use your intentions to build upon this foundation. Each year, this cycle of reflection, reset, and renewal will continue building upon itself to nurture greater and deeper feelings of abundance.

Cheers to new beginnings!

It's holiday time and with it lots of obligations and emotions.

The post Holiday Sadness is OK first appeared on Simplafyi.

The holiday season is a complicated time, sometimes filled with complicated emotions. We want to be joyful, but despite our best efforts, the feeling eludes us. Perhaps we’re coping with a layoff, the end of a marriage, the loss of a loved one, or the state of the world in general. The truth is, life is not a Hallmark movie, and the harder we try to conceal our feelings in cookie icing and gift wrap, the more they can manifest in unhealthy ways.

It’s ok to be sad. It’s ok to grieve. And it’s ok to be angry with the world. It’s also ok to give space to these difficult emotions and focus on self-care whenever you need to, even during the holiday season.

“The holidays can bring up so much sadness due to the loss of loved one or other significant losses. It’s important to pay attention to what we are feeling to help with this process. At times it’s important to spend some time alone to help release through crying, journaling, etc. At other times it’s good to be around others who love and support us to help us remember we are not alone.” says Susan Lataille, Certified Master Grief Coach, Integrative Health Coach and creator of the book, Shining a Light on Grief, a compilation in which Susan and 10 other women share their journeys through grief.

It can be comforting to realize we are not alone. According to McLean Hospital’s Guide to Managing Mental Health Around the Holidays, 38% of respondents to a recent survey said their stress levels increased during the holiday season, 64% of those living with a mental illness felt that their conditioned worsened during the holidays, and 9% of people in the northern U.S experience seasonal affected disorder due to longer hours of darkness this time of year. Psychology Today reports that at least 35% of people don’t look forward to the holidays because of the loss of a loved one.

Following are some tips from McLean’s on how to make this time of year a little more manageable:

Connect with people who feel similarly, or who understand what you’re going through, such as family members, a close friend, therapist, clergy, or coach.

Communicate your needs with loved ones to help them understand how they can support you; sometimes people want to help but aren’t sure how.

Give yourself permission to skip the celebrations. Do only what brings you peace, even if that means spending quiet time at home. If you do want to celebrate on a smaller scale, take time to outline and schedule your activities, and think about how to firmly yet graciously set comfortable boundaries. You can always get together with people after the holidays if now is not the right time. Communicating your plans with others will help manage expectations.

If money challenges are at the root of the discomfort (and let’s face it, money issues can be very stressful, especially this time of year), remind yourself that this is the season of giving not spending, and that there are many ways to give. In fact, sharing experiences with loved ones or giving sentimental tokens that inspire pleasant thoughts – things that instill happy memories – can be much more valuable over time than “stuff.” Handmade presents offer yet another gift you give yourself: the opportunity to slow down, think about your gift recipients, and use your creativity to produce something out of love – all of which can be spirit-lifting.

Other important self-care steps include getting a little more sleep, eating more fruits and vegetables, drinking less (or no) alcohol and caffeine, and exercising outside at mid-day to get as much natural light as possible.

Accepting that it’s ok to feel sad this time of year and reminding yourself that many others feel the same are important steps toward healing. And there are many other ways that SimplaFYI can help. From grief and life coaching to yoga, meditation, nutrition counseling, and more, we offer programs and services to make self-care a priority.

This time of year often brings up a variety of emotions. From joy to sadness to stress and anxiety. Create boundaries when you need them so you can cultivate gratitude to nurture peace within. When you are in a good place so is the rest of your world.

Next week is Thanksgiving, the official kick-off to the holiday season. Although some people welcome this time of year with eager anticipation, others must summon a deep well of inner strength just to get through it. No matter which group you fall into, there’s one step you can take to help improve the experience. Research shows that cultivating a practice of gratitude can nurture peace and contentment, even in those with heavy hearts.

Letter writing to ease anxiety

One study analyzed the results of three groups of college students seeking treatment for clinical mental health issues, primarily depression and anxiety. One group was asked to write letters of appreciation to one person each week for three weeks, another group was asked to write about negative experiences, and the last group did no writing. All three groups also underwent psychotherapy counseling.

After four weeks and again at 12 weeks, the group who wrote the letters reported “significantly better” mental health than the other two groups. Researchers attributed this result to the fact that the letter writers focused on positive words and emotions, rather than negative ones. Interestingly, only 23% of the letter writers actually delivered the letter to their intended recipient, indicating that the simple act of recording their grateful thoughts had positive effects.

Additional benefits

A 2021 report by Harvard Health Publishing summarized several studies illustrating additional health-related benefits of gratitude:

People who practice weekly gratitude journaling may improve their physical as well as mental health.

Couples who express gratitude to each other may feel better about the relationship and become more comfortable communicating concerns.

Managers who thank their employees may be surprised to experience a more productive team.

Different ways to practice

Writing letters, journaling, and verbal communication are just some of the ways to express gratitude. Others include meditating, praying, giving handmade or store-bought gifts or cards, sending flowers, or simply thinking about someone or something you’re grateful for.

Inner peace, better physical health, stronger relationships, and a more engaged workforce – take time this holiday season to see how cultivating a practice of gratitude might benefit your life.
