February, the love month! As we consider the rest of the month ahead we might do well to ask ourselves: How do we practice commitment in our lives?

“Commitment”. The word itself is intimidating and can apply to so many different areas in our lives. Commitment in romance. Commitment to work. Social commitments. In a given week, we each have so many different commitments to keep up with. And though commitment is frequently cited as a key to success–How can we manage them all?!

Try these tools to utilize when you feel overcommitted; patience and persistence! Have patience with yourself and create long term goals. Immediacy is overrated and a quick thrill, often resulting in disappointment.

 Go the distance with YOURSELF! 

Donald Sull of Harvard Business Review affirms it’s easy to find oneself stuck in an overwhelming web of commitment. However, the most successful managers are experts in detangling this web methodically. He explains that, in business, “Managers who understand the nature and power of their commitments can wield them more effectively.” 

And remember, some commitments are not meant to last forever. If a commitment is dragging you down, it’s time to re-evaluate. Talk it out, seek guidance and give yourself permission to let go.
